Free Biology CLEP* Exam Study Guide

General Description

The Biology CLEP exam covers the material you would normally learn in a first year Biology course, and involves learning a lot of key terms and processes.

You’ll be required to prove your knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • The processes, principles, and facts of biology.
  • The process of collecting, interpreting, and making a hypothesis from information, reaching a conclusion, and making new predictions.
  • The idea that science is a human undertaking that encompasses social penalties.

The exam itself consists of 115 multiple choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Because the exam covers a lot of information, it can be a challenge if you are not familiar with the content.

The Biology CLEP exam is broken down into three main sections and further subsections as follows:

Molecular and Cellular Biology – 33%

  • Chemical composition of organisms
  • Cells
  • Enzymes
  • Energy transformations
  • Cell division
  • Chemical nature of the gene

Organismal Biology – 34%

  • Structure and function in plants with emphasis on angiosperms
  • Plant reproduction and development
  • Structure and function in animals with emphasis on vertebrates
  • Animal reproduction and development
  • Principles of heredity

Population Biology – 33%

  • Principles of ecology
  • Principles of evolution
  • Principles of behavior
  • Social biology

How to Study for the Biology CLEP Exam

Many books contain all you will need to learn for the exam, but make sure to do some practice tests once you have finished reviewing the material.
