US History 1 is the first of two United States History exams offered through the CLEP program. This test covers the period of early colonization in the 16th century, up until around the end of the 19th century. The majority of this exam will focus on the events that occurred between 1790 and 1877. This period is the one in which the new US nation was tested by a number of economic, diplomatic, social, and cultural challenges. You will be expected to know a lot about all of these factors and the major individuals and movements that shaped the new nation.
The US History 1 CLEP exam is a bit longer than some of the others. Instead of the usual 90 questions, it contains 120. These questions are all multiple choice, and you will have 90 minutes to complete the test.
As mentioned, this exam covers a large section of American history, but more emphasis will be placed on the period between 1790 and1877. The specific percentage breakdown of the time periods the exam will focus on is as follows:
- 1500-1789 – 30%
- 1790-1877 –70%
You will need to know about a lot of different topics as they relate to these periods. The following are the approximate percentages of the exam devoted to each topic area:
- Political institutions and behavior and public policy – 35%
- Social developments – 25%
- Economic developments – 10%
- Cultural and intellectual developments – 15%
- Diplomacy and international relations – 15%
